There are two types of ways in which we praise one another. People praise is praising who someone is, usually unchangeable traits about this person, whereas process praise is the praise of what someone did or is doing well. People have more control over their "process," like effort or strategies, while they have less control over what we "people praise." According to Noa Kageyama Ph.D., when we "people praise" excessively and that person fails, they may blame themselves for the failure and feel more shame. Alternatively, when we praise their process, they feel less shame during mistakes and are more likely to want to try again, which is great for young musicians!Â
