The Impact of Improvisation on our Brains

Updated: Oct 1, 2021

A Mobile Music Lessons parent introduced me to Dr. Charles Limb, an otolaryngologist who is also a musician. In his TED Talk below, he shares about how when we improvise, the parts of our brain that control self-expression are turned up while the parts that control self-monitoring are turned down. This allows musicians to improvise freely without worrying about making mistakes. Creativity requires this disassociation between the two parts so that inventive impulses can flourish.
