Perform for the Fun (and Flow) of it!

Updated: Aug 4

Performing in front of people can seem daunting, especially if it is your first time. However, performing can also be fun if you focus on the flow of it. In other words, focusing on your musical interpretation and expression can be more enjoyable and may produce a better experience than simply honing in on technical aspects. Performance psychologist, Noa Kageyama shares his experience of how musical interpretation and expression elevated his experience of learning and performing:

...one of the turning points in my experience with performance anxiety was when I began to focus more on the interpretive and expressive aspects of the music I was playing. Where instead of obsessing over technical precision, I spent more time trying to understand the music I was playing. Studying the score, looking for patterns, developing an appreciation for what the composer was trying to do, and ultimately, having something to “say” with each phrase that I was excited to share with the listener.

I started having more “flow” experiences, where instead of worrying about the inevitable mistakes or imperfections in my performance, and what other people (especially other musicians) might think, I was more present, and actually began enjoying performing more.

As your instructor guides you in preparation for your performance, remember that your performance is a gift you give yourself and share with the audience. It's time to "flow" and play your favorite song!
