Music Together at Home

Updated: Jul 1

As music teachers and parents, we want our students to succeed in whatever they pursue, while encouraging musical activities at home. The first step to motivating students outside the music classroom includes effective communication and collaboration between parents and teachers. As teachers educate students, parents can also provide support and an educational environment for students to thrive. The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) identifies opportunities for parents and teachers to work together to encourage and educate music together at home:

  1. Teachers can record students playing music and send to parents to showcase their improvements or use as a learning tool in practice sessions.

  2. Parents can send recordings of students playing or sharing "musical moments" to teachers.

  3. Students can showcase their accomplishments by playing a recital at home.

When teachers and families work together, students are more likely to stay motivated and practice music regularly. Learn more benefits of musical collaborations from Dr. Lili M. Levinowitz here!
