One of the best ways students can grow as musicians is by experiencing live performances. Whether it's a symphony orchestra, choir, jazz vocalist, musical theater production, or community ensemble, live music provides inspiration, exposes students to new styles, and helps them see the possibilities that music can bring.

As you plan your family's holiday season, consider adding one or more of these musical events to your calendar.

Ring in the season with the powerful brass section of the Des Moines Symphony. This festive concert features holiday favorites including Joy to the World, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Sleigh Ride, and more, performed alongside the magnificent pipe organ at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Performances are scheduled for December 19 and 20.

A holiday tradition for many families, Mannheim Steamroller Christmas combines orchestral sounds, modern arrangements, stunning visuals, and holiday classics in a unique concert experience. The performance comes to the Des Moines Civic Center on December 21.

The Nutcracker

No holiday season is complete without Tchaikovsky's beloved score to The Nutcracker. Students can experience this timeless music through performances by Ballet Des Moines: The Nutcracker and Iowa Dance Theatre - The Nutcracker. These productions offer a wonderful introduction to classical music, dance, and storytelling through the arts.

For families who enjoy contemporary Christian music, An Irish Christmas with Rend Collective brings together worship music, Irish folk influences, and energetic live performance. The concert takes place December 5 at Hoyt Sherman Place.

Country music fans may enjoy this special holiday performance by Sara Evans. Students can experience professional vocal performance and stage presence while enjoying seasonal favorites and country classics. The concert takes place December 18 at Hoyt Sherman Place.

This festive production celebrates some of America's most beloved holiday music. Combining storytelling, musical theater, and classic songs, it is an excellent way for students to experience live performance and the enduring appeal of the Great American Songbook. Multiple performances are scheduled throughout December at The Ingersoll.

Students interested in jazz, cabaret, and vocal performance will enjoy this holiday show featuring legendary vocalist Marilyn Maye. Performances are scheduled in December at The Ingersoll.

While not strictly a concert, this beloved holiday production offers students the opportunity to experience live theater, storytelling, and performance. The Iowa Stage Theatre Company production runs December 11–20 and is a wonderful family holiday tradition.

Don't Forget the Local Gems

Some of the most meaningful musical experiences can be found right here in our community. Be sure to keep an eye out for:

  • School holiday concerts

  • Church Christmas programs

  • Community choir performances

  • Handbell choir concerts

  • Community band holiday performances

  • Madrigal dinners and seasonal music events

Many of these events are free, family-friendly, and provide students with the opportunity to support fellow musicians in their own communities.

Why We Encourage Students to Attend Live Performances

At Mobile Music Lessons, we believe learning happens both inside and outside the lesson. Live performances allow students to:

  • Observe musical expression and artistry

  • Experience different instruments and ensembles

  • Discover new genres and styles

  • Build appreciation for the performing arts

  • Gain inspiration for their own musical goals

This holiday season, we encourage our students and families to make time for live music. Whether attending a symphony performance, holiday concert, ballet, or community event, experiencing music together creates lasting memories and reminds us of the unique ways music enriches our lives.

Happy listening, and happy holidays from Mobile Music Lessons!
