MML Faculty Member, Campbell Performs in Europe

Learn about piano and violin faculty member, Campbell Helton's European adventures this summer performing, composing, and premiering compositions!
1. How and why did you decide to go to Europe this summer?
I applied to a few summer music festivals both inside and outside the US, and there were a few in Europe that happened to accept me! I wanted to get experience meeting different music professors and continuing my music studies over the summer.
I also conducted some research in Paris on my experience as a female composer, and the ways in which composition was taught. I will give a lecture recital on my findings this upcoming spring!
2. Who performed your compositions, and where were they performed?
The first festival I attended was in Paris as a composer. I wrote a solo piece for clarinet, and it was performed by Juilliard faculty member Dr. Ning Zheng. It was so amazing to work with such an incredible player!
My second festival was in Gijon, Spain. I performed as a pianist at a few outdoor concerts! This involved some Tchaikovsky, Bach, Beethoven, and also a new music piece by the in-residence composer, Oscar Colomina Bosch.
3. What did you learn from the trip to Europe?
I learned so much it’s hard to put into words! I learned about composition technique, piano technique, how to network, where I want to go professionally, how to order food in Spanish, all about art and the history of Paris, and so much more.
4. Did you meet any famous musicians or who/what inspired you?
The faculty at both festivals were incredibly inspiring. They were all from big conservatories like Eastman, Juilliard, Oberlin, Michigan, etc. Some of the people I worked with were Phillip Lasser, Logan Skelton, Julian Martin, and Doug Humphreys.
