One key to improving on your instrument is the practice consistently, but it’s not always the easiest choice after a long day. How can you avoid distraction by more appealing activities to make progress? A strategy called temptation bundling could be the answer.
Temptation bundling involves doing something you enjoy, like a favorite show or guilty pleasure snack, with the productive activity that requires willpower like doing fundamentals, scales, or long-tones. This approach helps make the more difficult task easier by adding an immediate reward.
Wharton professor Katherine Milkman conducted research which found that people who bundled their workouts with appealing activities were more likely to stick with their exercise goals. The same idea can apply to practicing music, like treating yourself to a favorite dessert only after completing a practice sessions or saving a fun podcast for when you are cleaning your instrument.
This small trick could make it easier to build good habits that get you closer to your long-term goals. Read the full article on temptation bundling at Bulletproof Musician for more inspiration!
